Newsletter No.96 Monday 25-01-21

Welcome back after the weekend and I hope you got to enjoy the cold weather and the snow over the weekend. We are now entering week 3 of our remote teaching and learning strategy and we are rising to the challenges that this throws up at us.

We have moved from our original method of delivery in week 1 where we were very prescriptive in the use of Teams Live classes to a method that allows for more flexibility for both students and teachers. Currently there is the flexibility for teachers and students to have 1 lesson per week that does not include the live teams lesson to allow students to engage in independent learning, completing the work that was issued in the previous lesson. Students, of course, still have access to their teacher in every lesson for clarification and assistance with their coursework either through Teams live, Teams chat or email.

The important thing to remember is that we are here to meet the needs of our students to enable then to achieve their best and that the engagement of both students and teachers must be sustainable to avoid burn out and or disaffection. We may be in this situation of remote teaching and learning for longer than we originally planned.

We are all doing our best and our best is good enough.

Id like to welcome Ms. Mooney to our staff as she commences with us today. Marie is here to replace Ms. Cunningham for the rest of the year, taking her classes of Music, English, SPHE, CSPE and her tutor group.

This Week.

Our Music Mock Practical’s are taking place today over Teams. Best of luck to Ms. Baraut and her students as they do their best today and tomorrow.

Our Transition Year interviews are taking place today and tomorrow, 25/1/21 & 26/1/21, for our 3rd Years who would like to take part in the TY programme next year. Best of luck to all applicants and to Ms. Leahy who is coordinating the interview process.

Our Options Process starts today also with our Incoming 1st Years and current TY and 3rd Years making decisions on their option subjects for next year. The window to choose options on VS Ware is open from today 25/1/21 to Friday 29/1/21. This is a paperless exercise as it is all happening on VS Ware. There is information for both Incoming 1st Years and next year’s 5th Years on our website to help with subject selection.

The Progress Reports for 5th Years and 2nd Years, instead of our Parent/Student/Teacher Meetings, will go live to parents on Thursday 28/1/21.

The application process for Leaving Cert Applied and Transition Year will commence on Monday 1/02/21 and information on this will be communicated to parents using our College App.

Last week we completed our Irish Mock Orals over Teams and this week we will engage in our Mock Modern Foreign Language Mock Orals over Teams. Best of luck to all our students engaging in their orals.

Mock Exams.

We have currently moved the dates of our Mock Exams to commence Monday 1/03/21 and finishing on Monday 15/03/21. We are making all necessary preparations for our Mock Exams to take place during these dates should schools be reopened. If this position changes, we will inform parents, students, and teachers as soon as possible. It is important for us to have as much certainty as we can around this process and so until we hear otherwise, the Mocks will take place during the dates above.

Semester 2 Assessments.

Our Semester 2 Assessments will take place during the week commencing Monday 1/03/21 to Friday 5/03/21 with students and teachers using different methods of assessment to allow students to show their learning. The school being closed and teaching and learning being conducted remotely does not affect the ability of students to complete their Semester 2 Assessments in the format decides upon by their teacher.
