Semester 2 Week 1

Welcome to Week 1 Semester 2 of our academic year as the school year move on relentlessly with an urgency that we are all to familiar with. I hope that you enjoyed the Toy Show at the weekend and that your appetitive for sport was quenched by the Irish Rugby team and the GAA championship. It is as important as ever to make our wellbeing deposits in our wellbeing banks because with shorter days and longer hours of darkness, the pressures of work and home, the lack of outlets until the current lockdown ends, we can find ourselves with raised stress levels that will find an outlet in ways that we could regret later. Just something to keep in mind.

SEN News

We mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities this Thursday December 3rd, 2020. The 2020 theme ‘Not all Disabilities are Visible’ also focuses on spreading awareness and understanding of disabilities that are not immediately apparent, such as mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, learning differences and cognitive dysfunctions, among others.

According to the WHO World Report on Disability, 15% of the world’s population, or more than 1 billion people, are living with disability. Of this number, it’s estimated 450 million are living with a mental or neurological condition - and two-thirds of these people will not seek professional medical help, largely due to stigma, discrimination, and neglect.

Another 69 million individuals are estimated to sustain Traumatic Brain Injuries each year worldwide, while one in 160 children are identified as on the autism spectrum.

These are just some examples of the millions of people currently living with a disability that is not immediately apparent, and a reminder of the importance of removing barriers for all people living with disability, both visible and invisible.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, isolation, disconnect, disrupted routines and diminished services have greatly impacted the lives and mental well-being of people with disabilities right around the world. Spreading awareness of invisible disabilities, as well as these potentially detrimental- and not always immediately apparent- impacts to mental health, is crucial as the world continues to fight against the virus.

Colaiste Pobail Setanta always aspires to be a responsibly inclusive school. To Celebrate diversity and to create awareness around Disability in Colaiste Pobail Setanta the SEN Department will send via email daily fact sheets to all staff around particular disabilities this week.

Schedule for Disability Awareness Week in Colaiste Pobail Setanta:

Day 1 – (Monday 30th Nov 2020 - Overview of Disabilities

Day 2- (Tuesday 1st December 2020) - Developmental Disabilities (downs syndrome, autism, dyslexia, processing disorders)

Day 3 – (Wednesday 2nd December 2020) - Behavioural / Emotional (ADD, ADHD, bi-polar, ODD)

Day 4– (Thursday 3rd November 2020) - Physical (Cerebral Palsy, muscular dystrophy, MS, chronic asthma, epilepsy)

Day 5 – (Friday 4th November 2020)- Sensory Disability (Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment (Deaf).

Please Note- All fact sheets will be also be uploaded on the Learning Register ONE NOTE for future reference.

Programme Coordinators News.

Transition Year

Transition Years have completed a very successful first Work Placement block, where the majority of students managed to find work placements for last week. The remaining small number of students worked on Certified Online Work-related courses. Feedback from employers was outstanding and a great tribute to the hard work and commitment of the students in TY this year.

Market Day

Rang Tara and Uisnigh are finalising their products this week for Market Day which will take place on Thursday 10th December. Marketing and advertising videos will be sent to staff this week so we would be grateful if you could play them to your class at that time or in tutorial.

Students will also visit classes during the week with their products.

It's important that you stress to students that pre-ordering is more important this year as it's likely that only 1st and 2nd years will attend market day due to social distancing and time constraints.

Semester 2 Know your City

The theme for TY this semester is "Know your City" and students will take part in a variety of projects and activities that link with a Dublin theme. As part of a History research and publishing project on this theme, TYs will be going on a trip to the Phoenix Park this Wednesday. They will hire bikes to take them around the park to complete their research group work. This is the first stage of a project which will see them eventually produce an eBook on the History and Facilities of the Parks of Dublin.

Leaving Cert Applied

Rang Turlach will embark on a one-week block of Work Experience this week.

We wish them all the best and hope to repeat a similar block after Christmas in their next session.

Wi-Fi and Broadband.

As you are aware, the IT department in DDLETB intend to roll out an upgrade of our Wi-Fi infrastructure very soon to rectify the very obvious issues we have with it. The current plan is to make the physical changes needed in the College during the Christmas Holidays so that our new and improved broadband will be fully operational for Semester 2 Week 5.
