Semester 1 Week 6

Farewell to Mr. Kelly

A huge thanks to all staff that were able to come to the Sports Hall on Thursday morning to bid farewell to our DP Noel Kelly. Noel is now the Principal of Grifeen Community College and will take up his new role after mid-term break. Setanta’s loss is Grifeen’s gain. Noel has made a huge difference to our College since he came here a short time ago and his influence and legacy will last for some time to come. He has been a great colleague, companion, teacher, friend, leader, and confidant. Best of luck in Grifeen Community College.

Meitheal Week.

During these times of physical and social distancing. Mask wearing and hand sanitisation, it can be a challenge to run our themed weeks in the College, which our students really benefit from, but our Guidance Dept hit the ground running last week with an amazing Meitheal Week. Huge thanks to our CG Teachers, Ms. Galbraith, Ms. Ward and Ms. O’Donovan. Please see out twitter feed on our website for pictures and comments.

Maths Week

No sooner has one themed week ended than the next themed week is up and running and this week it is Maths Week. Our Maths Dept have been working tirelessly to ensure that this years Maths Week will be fun for all. Please encourage your students to engage in the activities and incorporate as much numeracy as possible into your lessons.

There will be a daily maths puzzle questions for staff and students to answer which will be emailed through Microsoft Forms, with a prize for the winners at the end of the week🏆🥇

For the first time this year there will be a Maths Week TV, with programmes each day. I will share these links next week and feel free to show them in class during tutorial.

Kind Regards, The Maths Department.

Transition Year News

After a very successful first trip to Howth which kickstarted their Gaisce journey, Transition Year students are taking to the ski slopes this week.

On Tuesday, Rang Uisnigh will take part in a ski lesson at Kiltiernan ski slopes. Rang Tara will be going on Wednesday.

As the theme this semester is "Boost my Skills", the chance for students to learn how to ski, will be another exciting skill they can add to their repertoire.

Continuing the outdoor theme, they will take to the water next Monday 22nd October as they combine some Dublin history with the great outdoors in their Guided City Kayaking trip on the Liffey.

Students are also excited to be planning Work Experience for their first work placement, which will take place on 23rd-27th November.

Prototypes and online marketing plans are well under way for TY business ideas. Market Day will take place this year on 10th December, albeit with social distancing measures and creative online campaigns in place. We look forward to seeing how creative and adaptable our students can be in making this event a success.

Semester 1 Exams Update.

Last Monday the SLT and LT met to discuss how the Semester 1 exams would run. This had been discussed at the staff meeting also and I said that we would get back to you with some solutions. We have decided that the exams will go ahead and that there will be a Continuous Assessment weighting to the results, in line with the way the state exams went last year. We have a proposed timetable that we will finalise at the Monday LT Meeting. We have protocols that we will finalise at the LT meeting also and ask for input from out LWR’s before sharing with all staff. There will be differences to the running of the exams this year as there are a lot more exam centres needing supervision because of reduced class sizes and physical distancing. We are trying to ensure that the exams are meaningful while ensuring everyone’s safety.

Parent/Student/Teacher Meeting update.

Out PST Meetings are postponed at present because of concerns raised by our teacher unions with the DES and we are now waiting for direction from the DES on how the PST meetings can be conducted safely. When we have more information, we will get to work on what ever format we can go with. Thank you for your patience in this matter.
