Happy National Teacher Day to all our teachers. Welcome back after our long weekend which couldn’t have come at a better time to recharge the batteries and make some much-needed deposits in our wellbeing banks.

Speaking of which, this week is Meitheal Week and our Guidance Department have worked tirelessly over that past couple of weeks to ensure that there is something for everyone. Please encourage your students in all your classes to take part in as many activities as possible from the Setanta Hero to the Kilometre Challenge.

Meitheal Week is here. The week of the 5th of September to the 9th of October is the college’s annual Meitheal Week that promotes positive mental health within the college. There are activities/initiatives set up for the whole college community. We hope that you will be as excited as we are about the upcoming week.

Whole School Initiatives

  • CPSetanta Heroes

We have created a form for the students and staff to fill out whereby they or you can nominate someone who has done something nice for someone or their community during these difficult times. We are going to read out some of the nominations over the intercom at the end of every day. Let's make a big deal of our everyday heroes!

  • Meditation:

Whole School meditation will happen once during the week.

  • Setanta KM Challenge

Introducing our inaugural, annual ‘Setanta Km Challenge’!! We are running a class versus class, staffroom verses staffroom Km challenge. We would ask that students and staff download the app Map My Run and track the Km’s you complete. A class rep from every class will check for evidence (a screenshot from the app, please see below) and update the record sheets each evening! We will update the scoreboard each day. This will run from Monday to Thursday, with the winning classes (One Junior class and one senior class) and the individual Junior and Senior winners on Friday. The classes will win a trophy and the individual athletes with the most km’s clocked up will win a Fitbit each. Could each tutor please nominate someone from their class to be the rep for this initiative and email Guidance with their name by Thursday 1st Oct. We will then contact them with details on how to track the km’s for their classes.

Students

  • Art Competition – Design a Wellbeing Wall – we are asking for any of our more creative students to design a Wellbeing wall for the college. The student or group of students who have the most creative idea will see it come to life over the coming weeks. Good luck!! Send your idea or design to guidance@cpsetanta.ie by the end of Meitheal Week (Fri, 9th Oct 2020).
  • Classes: All SPHE, Wellbeing, Tutorial, and Careers classes will have lessons delivered on how to manage your mental health. Exam year groups will have classes on how to manage exam stress. The first years will also be taking part in the Fingal Mental Health Project. This will allow students to share how they have felt over the last few months with other schools and organizations in the community.

Teacher Wellbeing

  • The teacher wellbeing padlet is added to daily. Pick something from the padlet to switch off. Read some affirmations or try some meditation

Staff Meeting

Thank you to all staff for attending our staff meeting on Thursday and for your contributions. Some of the points covered included the introduction of the Temporary Journal which will be placed in both staff rooms for teachers of Period 1 and first period after lunch to bring to class for students who are without a journal, please log it on VS Ware then for the YH to see. We will be looking at the frequency of Mask Breaks and the format of the Semester 1 Exams today at the Leadership Meeting. Also, the introduction of Wellbeing Wednesday this week where there is no homework given this Wednesday and none due this Thursday, ensuring that our students will have a homework free night on Wednesday Night. I will communicate this to Patents also. I will circulate the key points and minutes of the staff meeting later.

2020 6th Years.

Our graduated 6th Years from last year are collecting their Yearbooks from the Front Office and it is great to see how well they are doing in the new chapter of their lives. Their Leaving Cert experience was vert different to previous years and the biggest lesson we can learn from the class of 2020? I guess the main lesson is to ….. “be prepared”. The way things have gone with the Leaving Certificate this year, clearly the advice must be to keep on top of your studies, meet any deadline and make sure to submit assignments on time, and prepare well for any assessment task during the year. The same advice applies equally to our Fifth-Year students.

School Coats and Jackets.

The weather is well and truly in Autumn mode and it is definitely coat and jacket weather. Our students, parents and guardians have been informed for that past few weeks that the only jacket or coat that is allowed inside the school gate is the crested College Jacket or a NAVY coat or jacket without insignia. Please remind our students of this rule and that all other jackets and coats will be confiscated to be collected by a parent or guardian.

Punctuality

Our College starts at 8:15 and therefore all students need to be in the building by 8:00 and in their classrooms, seated and ready by 8:10. To disrupt another student’s education and a chance and the results they deserve is indeed a very selfish act. I am asking all teachers, parents, and guardians to impress the importance of being on time to school and class, both morning and after lunch to all our students. I have attached the class times to the end of this letter.

New Staff Members

I’d like to wish a warm welcome to members of staff who have joined us today. Kevin Dillon is starting today in the Irish Department; Katie Wise starts in the Art Department and Angela starts as a new member of our cleaning staff. We wish them well here in Colaiste Pobail Setanta and I’m sure we all remember our first day here, so please make them feel welcome.

National Teacher Day.

To help us celebrate National Teacher Day our Guidance Depot have organised a Coffee Cart for the Centre Courtyard for staff to have a complementary coffee and Medb Farrell has organised treats in the staff rooms courtesy of TUI, so make sure to have a coffee and cake with a colleague today.
